2023 IIHF World Championship

The 2023 IIHF World Championship is scheduled to be held from Friday 12 to Sunday 28 May 2023, which will be organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). Finland and Latvia together are going to host this reputed tournament.

This 2023 IIHF World Championship will be another exciting tournament for all the fans from all ice hockey-playing nations. This is an annual international ice hockey tournament. 

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) was created on 15 May 1908, 114 years ago. It is a governing body for ice hockey worldwide. The headquarters of IIHF is in Zurich, Switzerland. The IIHF 

The main functions of the IIHF are to maintain the IIHF World Ranking based on international ice hockey tournaments, to govern, develop and organize hockey throughout the world, and to promote friendly relations among the member national associations. 

IIHF is also responsible for arranging sponsorships, license rights, advertising, and merchandising in connection with all IIHF competitions. In French, IIHF is called Fédération Internationale de hockey and in German, it is called Internationale Eishockey-Föderation.

The main tournament IIHF organized for both men and women is IIHF World Championship, Winter Olympics, U-20 IIHF World Championship, and U-18 IIHF World Championship.

The 2022 IIHF World Championship was hosted by Finland from 13 May to 29 May 2022. The host cities were Tampere and Helsinki, Nokia Arena of Tampere served as the main venue of the games. Where 16 teams participated in total. Finland became the champion and Canada was the runners-up. Czechia stood third and the USA stood forth.

Earlier this 2023 IIHF World Championship event was originally planned to be held in Saint Petersburg, Russia, but in February 2022 the International Olympic Committee (IOC) banned Russia’s hosting rights to all international sporting events due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Later on, Finland and Latvia submitted a joint bid, with Nokia Arena in Tampere and Arena Riga in Riga as potential host venues, which was confirmed by IIHF On 27 May 2022.

Qualified Teams

The top 14 teams of the 2022 IIHF World Championship qualified for this world cup. Two host teams Finland and Latvia got automatic qualification as a host.
