World Baseball Classic 2023

The World Baseball Classic 2023 is an international professional baseball tournament. Which is going to be held from Wed, 8 Mar, 2023  to Tue, 21 Mar, 2023. The WBC is committed to showcase the top talents in the world.

The World Baseball Classic is officially organized by the World Baseball Softball Confederation. It is the major international tournament of this sport. It attracts the top national teams from around the world. 

This World Baseball Classic 2023 will be the sixth edition of the World Baseball Classic which is going to be held in four places Taicung (Taiwan), Tokyo(Japan), Phoenix (United States), and Miami(United States). 

This will be the first time in the tournament where 20 teams are going to participate. 16 countries participated in the last 2017 world Baseball classic. Where USA Clinched the title, Puerto Rico stood second, Japan stood third and forth position won by Netherlands.

Japan won the 2006 and 2009 World Baseball Classic title  Dominican Republic won the 2013 title and The United States won the 2017 WBC by beating Puerto Rico.

The 16 countries who have participated in the 2017 World Baseball Classic will have an automatic berth in the 2023 WBC. And four more countries viz. Czech Republic, Great Britain, Nicaragua and Panama are going to enter. Which makes a total of 20 teams. 

Czech Republic, Great Britain and Nicaragua are the debutantes and Panama is going to participate after a gap of two World Baseball Classic. They emerged from the two qualifier tournaments of six teams each.

The qualifying round was held from 16 September 2022 to 5 October 2022 in Regensburg, Germany at Armin-Wolf-Arena and Panamá City, Panama at Estadio Rod Carew where 12 teams participated in total. 

This qualifying round consisted of two tournaments where six teams participated in each. Winners and runners-up of each tournament qualified for the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Great Britain (23rd Rank) was clear winner and Check Republic (14th Rank) was runners-up in the first qualifier tournament whereas Panama (13th Rank) was winner and Nicaragua (15th Rank) was runners-up in the second qualifier tournament.

The previous World Baseball Classic 16 teams are Australia, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Israel, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Korea, Mexico, Puerto Rico, United States, and Venezuela. 

The World Baseball Classic tournament is held every four years. Last WBC was held in the year 2017 after that next WBC was supposed to be held in the year 2021, but due to Covid 19 pandemic it was postponed to 2023. Dates, venues, and pools for the 2023 WBC tournament were already announced in July by World Baseball Classic 2023.

All 20 teams of the World Baseball Classic 2023 Tournament has been divided into four pools of five teams. Within these pools, all five teams will play a round-robin tournament. Top two teams with maximum points in each pool advancing to the knockout round of eight.

Pool matches will be held from 8th to 15th March, then two quarter finals will be held from 15th to 18th March, semifinals will be held from 19th to 20th March and finally final match will be held on March 21st, 2023.

Next 2023 World Baseball Classic roster is going to be star-laden which include Mike Trout, Nolan Arenado, Paul Goldschmidt, Bryce Harper, Pete Alonso and many more.
